What is Hyperosmia?

Hyperosmia is a heightened sensitivity to smell. For some, it can feel like a superpower—detecting even the faintest aroma. For others, it can be overwhelming, triggering discomfort, nausea, or sensory overload.

People with hyperosmia (including many in neurodivergent, migraine-prone, and sensory-sensitive communities) often struggle to find products that feel safe. Overpowering scents in common candles, sprays, and cleaners can become a source of stress rather than comfort.

Our Honest Approach to Fragrance

At Scentsetiva, we acknowledge the complexity of scent sensitivities. That’s why we use non-toxic, Australian-made fragrances that blend essential oils with carefully selected synthetic elements. These synthetic elements are not the same as mass-market perfume chemicals. They are clean, paraben free, phthalate free IFRA-compliant, and designed for low reactivity as per our testing with specific research tailored to our brand.

What does sensory testing mean?

We have used all of our products in the home for over 2 years before launching, during this time all adjustments and research has been targeted to ease reactions. By using our home with sensory families to gain feedback we have collated data to use the best aromas. Some of our aromas are still strong for some people but they still work within the research and allow all users the satisfaction of beautiful scents.

Our goal is to provide sensory-friendly options for people who want to enjoy scent again—gently, intentionally, and without irritation.

Scent as a Support Tool (Not a Cure-All)

We’ll be clear: scent isn’t a solution for everything, and we never claim it will “fix” anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, or sensory issues. But what it can do is offer a supportive layer—an anchor to a routine, a cue for mindfulness, or a gentle nudge toward calm.

Fragrance, when chosen carefully, can be a sensory companion in rituals that support your wellbeing.

I’ve noticed since we started using Scentsetiva in our home we are a lot less reactive, less afraid of aroma, and we use our products with joy instead of fear. To us this means the world, its leaps and bounds from how our life used to be.

Rituals That Work with You, Not Against You

Here are ways scent might support you through the day—without overwhelming your senses:

🕯 Morning Focus: A soft citrus mist or candle can signal the start of your day. The suggestion of freshness may assist in lifting your mental fog—without overpowering your space. We suggest our Sunlit Citrus blend of Orange, Maychang and Bergamot essential oil.

🌬 Midday Reset: If you’re feeling scattered, a neutralising air mist or diffuser can encourage a pause, a breath, a mindful shift. We love blending bergamot with green tea notes for a gentle, grounded effect. Our Spa Oasis would be our companion to this reset.

🛁 Evening Wind-Down: Lavender, sandalwood, or rose geranium in a candle or bath product might gently support nervous system regulation. These can be comforting scents—often associated with rest or reflection.

Our Velvet Rose body wash in the bath with some petals and our Sea Crystal Candle is a way to soothe your body and relax at the end of your day.

🧼 Cleaning Without Clashing: Our plant-based, low-tox cleaning range is designed with scent sensitivity in mind. It freshens the space without harsh chemicals or aggressive perfumery—something we know matters for people with hyperosmia.

Support Over Stimulus

Everyone’s response to fragrance is different. That’s why our scents are:

  • Layered, not loud
  • Clean, not cloying
  • Tested by sensitive users, not just fragrance fans

We invite you to explore what works for you—start with a mist, a mini candle, or a diffuser and create your own calm space, step by step.

The Scent-Set Mindset

Your environment matters. Your daily rhythm matters. And while scent alone isn’t a solution, it can become part of the puzzle—supporting emotional balance, helping set boundaries in your day, and offering small moments of presence.

With love and care!
